The best way to visit the Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum is the most famous museum in the world. There are unique pieces of art in this museum, but there are also many ways to get lost in it! You could spend weeks at the Louvre Museum, explore all the rooms, but, if you don’t have a whole week to visit it, this is the best way to visit the Louvre Museum!

Select the right ticket

It is so easy and pleasant to spend time at the Louvre, that it would be really too bad to waste time out of it! The best way to visit the Louvre Museum is, first of all, not to enter the Louvre by the entrance of the pyramid!

If you want to take wonderful photos of the Pyramid, leave the Museum by the “eviatontrance”, but do not enter by it. It is constantly and incredibly crowded and the lines are extremely long! Prefer the entrance of the metro station “Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre” (line 1), or that of 99 Rivoli Street by the Carrousel du Louvre.

Buy your tickets in advance

Of course, the best thing to do before visiting the Louvre Museum is to buy your ticket before going to the Museum, so you don’t have to wait in what can be super long lines at the security entrance (30 minutes to 2 hours) and then wait in the line of ballots (usually shorter) inside the lobby/reception.

You can buy tickets for any day online (we have seen that they are sold out). These are electronic ballots and do not need to be printed. You only have to choose the date.

At the entrance, go directly to the guard at the front of the Pyramid entrance. There is a separate line for those who already have ballots, you still have to go through security, but you would already pass close to the front and once inside with your ballot you don’t have to line up again.

Remember: The Museum is free for children under the age of 18 and for young adults of the European Union under the age of 26. Young adults only have to show their identification to the Museum staff.

You should also know the opening and closing hours. The Louvre Museum is open every day except Tuesdays (Mondays are usually very crowded). It opens at 9:00 am and closes at 6:00 pm.

On Wednesdays and Fridays the museums remain open until 9:45 pm. And every first Sunday, from October to March, access to the Museum is free for all visitors! For more information, you can visit the Louvre Museum website.

Know precisely where your favorite works are

The Louvre is one of the largest museums in the world with many different historical pieces of art. When you arrive in Paris, going to the Louvre Museum is a must! There are always one or two masterpieces that we cannot afford to miss!

If you have some artwork that you really want to see more than anything, but don’t feel like wasting time searching, take a look at the map of the Museum before entering. You will go exactly where you need to go.

Once you enter the Museum, you will quickly realize that there are three different entrances to reach the different floors: the Richelieu entrance, the Sully entrance and the Denon entrance.

On the ground floor, you will find many Roman, Greek and Egyptian sculptures and antiques. When you arrive, my advice is to go to the Apollo Gallery, which is the place where you can admire the fabulous ceiling as well as the King’s crown! So, you can go to level 1 of the Museum which I think is the most popular.

Located on the Denon wings of the Museum, you will be able to see Italian Renaissance paintings, such as the work of Leonardo Da Vinci, the famous Mona Lisa.

Then continue to the French paintings where you can see French masterpieces, such as “La Liberté guidant le Peuple” (Freedom guiding the people) by Delacroix, or even “Le Sacre de Napoléon” (Napoleon’s coronation) by Jacques-Louis David. Finally, you can go to see “the Venus of Milo” (Aphrodite of Milos).

If you are not too tired yet, you can walk around the Museum, go to the different galleries or just take a look at the map of the Museum and you will find some galleries that are of your best interest! You can also read this article to check out some paintings worth having a look at!

The best way to visit the Louvre Museum is to plan your visit in advance. The Louvre Museum is very popular, so it is always full of people. But if you get to know where the works of art that you can’t miss are, you’ll save precious time and see your favourites.

The best time to visit the Louvre Museum

I recommend going to the Louvre Museum early in the day, before the Parisians arrive. Local people love to go to the Museum whenever they can, which tends to fill up quickly. Sometimes visiting the Louvre can be a bad experience. Because you can’t see the paintings well because of the number of people in front of you, you may be bothered by the noise, so you may not appreciate the Museum.

After having worked all week, Parisians invade museums during their only free time: on weekends, especially on Sunday afternoons. Therefore, if you want to avoid the Parisian crowd, it would make sense to schedule your visit to the Louvre Museum during the week.

The best way to visit the Louvre Museum and have a quiet visit is to go in the morning before the crowd arrives and you will be able to enjoy your visit in a peaceful museum. If you are an early riser, visiting a museum at its opening guarantees a good visit. To avoid waiting in line, you can buy tickets with Tiqets, follow our link to get all the information!

Now you know the best way to visit the Louvre Museum. My final advice is to relax by the Museum after the long visit of the Louvre.

Once outside the Museum, cross the “Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel” (the triumphal arch of the carousel), reach the Jardin des Tuileries (the Tuileries garden) and simply relax and have long conversations about the great art you have just seen and about the meaning of life! This is the best way to end your visit to the Louvre Museum in Paris!
